Term | Definition |
nose | the organ that you can inhale and exhale out of...also you can smell with it |
mouth | Air from your nose can enter this organ, you can also breathe and taste through this organ |
epiglottis | this flap of tissue closes when you swallow, so that food does not enter your airway |
pharynx | this is another word for "throat" and air passes through it and over your voice box |
larynx | this is another word for "voice box" which is located in the throat |
trachea | air passes into this strong tube, and it also divides into two branches |
lungs | this organ has two parts, and is the color pink when it is healthy...it puffs up with air when we inhale and deflates when we exhale |
bronchi | these are the two branches of the trachea, each leads into a separate lung and divides into smaller branches |
diaphragm | this is a flat sheet of muscle which pulls air in and pushes air out of the lungs |
alveoli | these are small sacs at the end of the bronchi branches, taking oxygen TO the blood stream and pulling carbon dioxide OUT of the blood as well... |
capillaries | tiny blood vessels that cover the alveoli |
red blood cells | take sugar and oxygen to the mitochondria (so it can make energy) and take carbon dioxide and water AWAY from the mitochondria after energy is made |
mitochondria | an organelle in the animal cell which uses oxygen and sugar to make energy |
Movement of the diaphragm | It moves UP when we EXHALE and it pulls DOWN when we INHALE |
