Question | Answer |
What are the 7 characteristics of life? | 1: Organisation. 2: Nutrition. 3: Respiration. 4: Excretion. 5: Sensitivity. 6: Reproduction. 7. Homeostasis |
Organisation | This is the structured plan which improves efficiency and increases the chances of survival. eg: cell > tissue > organ > organ system > organism. |
Nutrition | All living things take in food from their environment. Autotrophs make their own food. Heterotrophs eat plants or animals. |
Excretion | This is the removal of metabolic waste made by the body. eg sweat, carbon dioxide and urine |
Sensitivity | All living organisms respond to their environment by taking in information and reacting accordingly. |
Homeostasis | Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment eg: temperature, pH, carbon dioxide levels, glucose levels. |
Respiration | Respiration is the release of energy from food. There are 2 types: aerobic and anaerobic |
Reproduction | All living things pass on information, genetic or otherwise, to a new generation. |
What is a cell? | A cell is the basic unit of life that displays all the characteristics of life |
Tissue | A tissue is a group of cells with a common function working together. |
Organ | An organ is a group of tissues with a common function working together |
Organ system | An organ system is a group of organs working together |
Organism | An organism is the result of several organ systems working together |
