Term | Definition |
Nostrils | Two openings in the nose through which air is inhaled |
Nose | Filters and humidifies air |
Epiglottis | Flap of tissue that prevents food from passing into the trachea |
Larynx | The voice box- responsible for producing sound |
Trachea | The windpipe |
C-shape rings of cartilage | Structures that help to keep the trachea and bronchi from closing in when air is drawn through them |
Bronchi | The two subdivisions of the trachea |
Bronchioles | Tiny branches of the bronchi |
Mucus | Present in the trachea and, bronchi and bronchioles to trap small unwanted particles |
Cilia | Tiny hairs present in the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles to move mucus and unwanted particles from the breathing system to the stomach |
Lungs | Large, pink, spongy structures in which gaseous exchange takes place |
Alveoli | These tiny air sacs form the end of each bronchiole. |
