alveoli | tiny air filled pouches or sacs in the lungs |
bronchi | the two tubes that connect the windpipe to the lungs |
capillaries | tiny blood vessels. Capillaries surround each alveoli in the lungs. |
carbon dioxide | the gas that is made when oxygen combines with food |
cells | the building blocks of all living things |
cilia | tiny hairs in the air passages. Cilia wave back a nd forth like paddles to push mucus toward the throat. |
diaphragm | the dome shaped muscle below the lungd that is used in breathing. |
larynx | the voice box. |
epiglotis | the flap that closes over the larynx when you swallow |
lungs | spongy sacks in the chest that put oxygen into the blood and take carbon dioxide out of it |
mucus | a thick, sticky liquid that traps germs and dirt in the air passages. |

pharynx | the throat. Passages from the nose and mouth connect to the pharynx. |

trachea | the windpipe. The trachea connects the larynx to thr bronchi |
vocal cords | two stretchy bands inside the voicebox that vibrate and make voice sounds |
