Question | Answer |
ribs | Bones in your chest that protect your ribs and heart. |
muscle | A type of tissue that pulls or contracts to move you, or do jobs in the body. The heart is a pump that is made of this type of tissue. |
veins | Large blood vessels that carry blood IN toward the heart. |
arteries | Large blood vessels that carry blood Away from the heart. |
capillaries | Microscopic blood vessels with walls that are just one cell thick. They connect arteries and veins. Nutrients & oxygen diffuse in & out of the blood through the walls of these. |
diffusion | When molecules pass through a membrane, like into or out of a cell. |
lungs | 2 organs in the chest that inhale (breath in) oxygen and exhale (breath out) carbon dioxide. |
cellular wastes | Substances that cells no longer need, such as carbon dioxide, excess salt, urea, excess water, etc. Transported by the blood to be removed from the body. |
hormones | Chemical messages transported in the blood. Produced in special organs called glands. |
hemoglobin | Chemical in red blood cells that holds on to oxygen, to transport it. |
plasma | The liquid part of blood (mostly made up of water) that carries everything else in blood. |
red blood cells | Cells in blood that carry oxygen, with the help of hemoglobin. |
white blood cells | Cells in blood that fight disease by destroying and 'eating' bacteria, viruses, etc. |
platelets | Irregularly shaped blood cells that help blood to clot where there is a cut or injury. They stick together and dry up to form a scab. |
small intestine | Organ where all nutrients enter the blood, by diffusion into capillaries. |
villi | Microscopic finger-like structures in the small intestine, they contain capillaries for absorbing nutrients into the blood by diffusion. |
tissues | A group of similar cells working together, like muscle or skin. |
organs | Special structures in a body made up of tissues. Each has a specific job or jobs. |
atom | The smallest unit of matter. |
molecule | It is made of 2 or more atoms held together by bonds, like O2 or H2O |
element | Substance made of only one type of atom, like C or Mg or O2 |
compound | Substance made of 2 (or more) different types of atoms like H2O or C6H12O6 |
bonds | The attractions (forces) that hold atoms together to make molecules. They contain energy! |
reactants | The “ingredients” necessary for a chemical reaction. They “react” to form the products. |
products | What is created or produced after a chemical reaction. |
