Term | Definition |
ECOSYSTEM | System consisting of all of the interactions that occur between the abiotic & biotic factors within an environment; "eco-" = earth |
BIOME | 1 of the world’s major communities, classified according to the predominant vegetation; characterized by adaptation of organisms to that particular environment. |
HABITAT | Place where an organism naturally lives & grows. |
MICROHABITAT | Very small, specialized habitat, such as the space under a rock; "micro-" = small |
POPULATION | Group of organisms of the same species located within the same geographical location. |
BIODIVERSITY | Number of different species of plants & animals in an area. |
ECOLOGICAL SUCESSION | Change in types of species present in a community over time, such as after a disturbance. |
CLIMAX COMMUNITY | Relatively stable state of succession, or the end product of succession. |
SUSTAINABLE | Capable of maintaining the current community at a steady level without exhausting natural resources or causing severe ecological damage. |
ORGANISM | Individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form. |
BIOTIC FACTOR | Living or once living part of an organism's habitat; "bio-" = life |
ABIOTIC FACTOR | Non-living parts of an ecosystem such as soil, climate & rainfall; "a-"= not or without |
TERRESTRIAL BIOME | Large geographic land areas with similar climates & ecosystems; "terra-" = earth |
AQUATIC BIOME | Various water (fresh & salt) systems that make up distinct communities; "aqua-" = water |
PRIMARY SUCCESSION | Ecological succession that begins in an area where no biotic community previously existed. |
SECONDARY SUCCESSION | Succession on a site where an existing community has been disrupted. |
ENVIRONMENT | The surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates. |
COMMUNITY | All the different populations that live together in an area. |
INTERDEPENDENCE | The dependence of two or more living things on each other. |
TROPHIC LEVEL | Each step in a food chain, food web, or energy pyramid. |
ADAPTATION | Inherited characteristic that increases an organism's chance of survival. |
PIONEER SPECIES | First species to populate an area during ecological succession. |
LIMITING FACTOR | An environmental factor that prevents a population from increasing. |
DISTURBANCE | An event, such as storm, fire, flood, drought, overgrazing or human activity, that changes a community and alters resource availability. |
INVASIVE SPECIES | Species that enter new ecosystems and multiply, harming native species and their habitats. |
EQUILIBRIUM | A state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced. |
