abiotic factor | physical, or nonliving, factor that shapes an ecosystem |
habitat | area where an organism lives, including biotic and abiotic factors |
niche | full range of physical and biological conditions in which an organism lives and the way in which an organism uses its conditions |
resource | any necessity of life |
plankton | tiny free floating organisms in the water |
phytoplankton | algae and other small photosynthetic organisms found near the surface of the ocean and forming part of plankton |
zooplankton | tiny animals that form part of plankton |
wetland | ecosystem in which water either covers the soil or is present at or near the surface of the soil for at lease part of the year |
estuary | wetland at which rivers meet the ocean |
detritus | particles in organic material that provides food for organisms at the base of the estuary's food web |

coral reef | diverse and productive environment named for coral animals that make its primary structure |
benthos | organisms that live attached to or near the ocean |
