periodic table | a chart where all elements are organized into periods and groups according to their properties. |
chemical symbol | one-or-two letter code that stands for and element. |
period | a row of elements in the periodic table arranged by atomic mass. |
group | column of elements in the periodic table, in which elements have certain properties in common. |
matter | the material that all objects and substances are made of. |
element | substance that are the building blocks of all matter. |
compound | matter made of 2 or more elements the elements in a compound are chemically bonded. |
atom | smallest particle into which and element can be divided and still have properties of that element. |
electron | negatively charged particle found outside the nucleus of an atom. |
nucleus | the center of an atom. |
proton | positively charged particle located in the nucleus of an atom. |
neutron | in an atom particle with a neutral charge located in the nucleus. |
energy level | the amount of energy carried by an electron in an atom. |
isotope | atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons in an atom. |
mass number | amount of matter in something. |
atomic number | number of protons in the nucleus of 1 atom. |
metal | element that is made of a hard wearable element to make jewelry or even cars. |
malleable | can be molded in to shapes. |
ductile | a term used to describe a material that can be pulled out in to a long wire. |
conductivity | the ability of an object to transfer heat or electricity to another object. |
reactivity | the ease and speed with which an element combines, or reacts with other elements and compounds. |
corrosion | the gradual wearing away of a metal element due to chemical reaction. |
alkali metal | an element in Group 1 of the periodic table. |
alkaline earth metal | an element in Group 2 of the periodic table. |
transition | one of the elements in Group 3 through 12 of the periodic table. |
alloy | a mixture of two of more elements, one of which is metal. |
nonmetal | an element that lacks most of the properties of a metal. |
diatomic molecule | an molecule consisting of two atoms. |
halogen | an element found in Group 17 of the periodic table. |
noble gas | an element in Group 18 of the periodic table. |
metaloid | an element that has some characteristics of both metals and nonmetals. |
semiconductor | a substance that can conduct electricity under some condition. |
