Term | Definition |
sepal | Outer part of bud that protects and surrounds the bud before it opens. |
petals | Surrounds the inside parts of the flower after it opens. Brightly colored to attract insects. |
stamen | The male part of the flower. It includes the anther and the filament. |
anther | The top part of the stamen which produces pollen. |
filament | The bottom part of the stamen which holds up the anther. |
pistil | The female part of the flower. It includes the stigma, style and ovary. |
stigma | The sticky part at the top of the pistil. |
style | The tube that connects the stigma and the ovary and it is part of the pistil. |
ovary | The female reproductive part of a flower that contains the eggs / seeds. |
embryo | The pollinated egg (baby seed). |
pollen | The powdery material that is made by the stamen and is used in reproduction. |
pollination | The pollen transferring (moving) from the stamen to the pistil. |
seed | The pollinated egg. It can grow into a new plant. |
spore | A single cell that can develop into a new plant. Usually found on the back of leaves. |
