safety | Keeps the firearm from accidentally firing |
trigger | The device that is squeezed to cause the weapon to fire |
trigger guard | Protects the trigger from being pulled accidentally |
barrel | Metal tube the bullet travels down when fired. |
muzzle | The opening at the end of the barrel. |
sight | part that helps aim the firearm |
grip | Where you hang on to the end of a handgun. |
hammer | Device that strikes the firing pin and causes the weapon to fire. |
magazine | In a semiautomatic hand gun, where cartridges are stored before firing. |
cartridge | All the parts of ammunition; primer, powder, casing, and bullet |
butt | The end of a long gun placed against the shoulder when firing. |
chamber | Area of the weapon where the cartridge sets just before firing |
land | The part of the barrel not carved out during rifling. |
groove | The part of the barrel carved out during rifling |
bullet | Lead object fired out of the barrel |
casing | Metal part that holds all the cartridge contents. |
Bore | The inside of the barrel |
caliber | the diameter of inside of the barrel measured from land to land |
gauge | the number of shot (little balls) that will equal 1 pound |
stock | the wooden (plastic) part of a long gun between the butt and the action |
primer | small amount of chemical that creates a spark when struck by the firing pin |
striations | scratches on the bullet made by the barrel as the bullet travels down the barrel |
