scientific inquiry | refers to the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on the evidence you gather |
hypothesis | a possible explanation for a set of observations or to answer a specific question |
variable | factors that change in an experiment |
manipulated variable | the one variable that is purposely changed in an experiment |
responding variable | the factor that may change in response to the manipulated variable |
controlled experiment | an experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time |
operational variable | a statement that describes how to measure a particular variable or how to define a particular term |
data | facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observations |
communicating | is the sharing of ideas and experiment findings with others through writing and speaking |
scientific theory | is a well-tested explanation for a wide range of observations or experiment results |
scientific law | describes an observation pattern in nature without attempting to explain it |
