climax community | the final and most stable stage of an ecosystem after a succession event has occurred |

consumer | organism that eats other organisms to obtain its energy |
decomposer | organism that breaks down organic matter |
ecological succession | a change in the inhabitants of an ecosystem |
ecosystem | all the living and nonliving parts of the environment |
food chain | Pathway of energy transfer through levels of feeding patterns |
food web | Diagram showing ALL feeding patterns in an ecosystem |
habitat | the place where an organism lives |
pioneer species | The first organisms to colonize an ecosystem after a succession event has occurred |
population | All the members of the same species that live in the same place |
primary succession | Type of succession that occurs where no soil previously existed |
producer | An organism that produces (makes) its own food. |
secondary succession | Type of succession that occurs where an ecosystem did exist previously |
species | A group of organisms that can mate and produce fertile offspring |
trophic level | The steps in a food chain or food web, producers are always the first level |
