Term | Definition |
matter | Anything that takes up space and has mass. Everything around us is made up of matter. |
solid | Matter that has a definite shape and takes up a definite amount of space. Ex: book, desk, chair |
liquid | Matter that takes up a definite amount of space, but does not have a definite shape. Ex: water, apple juice, milk |
gas | Matter that has no definite shape or size. Ex: oxygen, helium |
water vapor | Water in the form of a gas in Earth's atmosphere |
evaporation | When water on Earth changes from a liquid into a gas |
condensation | When water in Earth's atmosphere changes from a gas back into a liquid |
precipitation | Water in the atmosphere that falls to Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail |
accumulation | Water that collects or builds up on Earth |
groundwater | Water that soaks into the ground |
