Amino Acids | Amino acids are biologically important organic compounds composed of amine and carboxylic acid functional groups, along with a side-chain specific to each amino acid. |
Flask | a bottle, usually of glass, having a rounded body and a narrow neck, used especially in laboratory experimentation. |
Mesosphere | the region between the ionosphere and the exosphere, extending from about 250–650 miles (400–1050 km) above the surface of the earth. |
Glacier | an extended mass of ice formed from snow falling and accumulating over the years and moving very slowly, either descending from high mountains, as in valley glaciers, or moving outward from centers of accumulation, as in continental glaciers. |
Mass | a body of coherent matter, usually of indefinite shape and often of considerable size |
Density | the state or quality of being dense; compactness; closely set or crowded condition. |
Biomass | the amount of living matter in a given habitat, expressed either as the weight of organisms per unit area or as the volume of organisms per unit volume of habitat. |
Capacity | the maximum amount or number that can be received or contained; cubic contents; volume |
Comet | a celestial body moving about the sun, usually in a highly eccentric orbit, consisting of a central mass surrounded by an envelope of dust and gas that may form a tail that streams away from the sun. |
Ice shelf | an ice sheet projecting into coastal waters so that the end floats. |
Manometer | an instrument for measuring the pressure of a fluid, consisting of a tube filled with a liquid, the level of the liquid being determined by the fluid pressure and the height of the liquid being indicated on a scale. |
Mammal | any vertebrate of the class Mammalia, having the body more or less covered with hair, nourishing the young with milk from the mammary glands, and, with the exception of the egg-laying monotremes, giving birth to live young. |
Gamma | a unit of weight equal to one microgram. |
Fahrenheit | 1686–1736, German physicist: devised a temperature scale and introduced the use of mercury in thermometers. |
Methane | a colorless, odorless, flammable gas, CH 4, the main constituent of marsh gas and the firedamp of coal mines, obtained commercially from natural gas: the first member of the methane, or alkane, series of hydrocarbons. |
meiosis | part of the process of gamete formation, consisting of chromosome conjugation and two cell divisions, in the course of which the diploid chromosome number becomes reduced to the haploid. |
Migrating | to pass periodically from one region or climate to another, as certain birds, fishes, and animals |
Ecology | the branch of biology dealing with the relations and interactions between organisms and their environment, including other organisms. |
Erosion | the act or state of eroding; state of being eroded. |
Average Molecular | the total weight of all the polymer molecules in a sample, divided by the total number of polymer molecules in a sample. |
Inorganic | not consisting of or deriving from living matter. |
Montane | is the branch of ecology that studies life systems on mountains or other high elevation regions on the Earth. |
Particle | a particle is a small localized object to which can be ascribed several physical or chemical properties such as volume or mass. |
Hexane | Hexane is an alkane of six carbon atoms, with the chemical formula C₆H₁₄. |
Biotic Index | a scale for showing the quality of an environment by indicating the types of organisms present in it |
Colorimeter | is a device used in colorimetry. In scientific fields the word generally refers to the device that measures the absorbance of particular wavelengths of light by a specific solution. |
Ozone | Ozone, or trioxygen, is an inorganic molecule with the chemical formula O 2. |
Osmosis | the spontaneous net movement of solvent molecules through a partially permeable membrane into a region of higher solute concentration, in the direction that tends to equalize the solute concentrations on the two sides. |
Condensation | the change of the physical state of matter from gas phase into liquid phase, and is the reverse of vaporization. |
Nutrient | the components in foods that an organism utilizes to survive and grow. |
