Amylase | A digestive enzyme that breaks down starch. |
Chemical Digestion | Enzyme activity. |
Enzyme | A protein that is capable of speeding up a chemical reaction. |
Mechanical Digestion | Tearing, grinding, and mixing of food in the mouth. |
Saliva | A watery substance produced by three glands that helps to break down food. It contains amylase. |
Sphincter | A ring of muscle that keeps swallowed food in the stomach. |
Trachea | The windpipe. |
Bolus | A big soggy ball of food that triggers a swallowing reflex. |
Epiglottis | A flap that closes over the trachea when we swallow so that food goes to the stomach. |
