Term | Definition |
Brief | A memorandum of material facts, points of law, precedents, etc., prepared to familiarize the court with the facts and the law of a particular case. |
Citation | A legal authority, such as a constitution, statute, case, or other authoritative source, which is used to support a written legal document. |
Conform(ed)(ing) | To insert on all copies of a document the information shown on the original so the copy will reflect dates, signatures, and corrections that were placed on the original. |
Execute(ing) | To complete; to sign; to carry out according to its terms. |
Law Blank | A printed legal form available for preparing documents. |
Legal Backing | Heavy paper longer than the document and typically made of colored stock. |
Legal Cap | Ruled long paper. |
Sic | Latin term placed in parentheses following any mistake in quoted material to indicate that the mistake appears in the original. |
Table of Authorities | A table of sources used in constructing a brief, including constitutions, statues, case law, and other references structured according to strict rules about the order and display of each reference. |
Testimonium Clause | The clause of a deed or a legal instrument immediately preceding the signatures that read: "In witness whereof the parties hear unto have caused this instrument to be properly executed the day and year first above written. |
