lodestone | A natural iron containing rock that acts as a magnet |
magnetised | To make something magnetic |
permanent magnets | Magnets that stay magnetised |
temporary magnets | Magnets that easily lose their magnetism |
domains | Sections in a material where the magnetic spins of the atoms are in the same direction |
magnetically hard | Hard to magnetism but becomes a permanent magnet |
magnetically soft | Easy to magnetism but becomes a temporary magnet |
repel | To pull apart |
attract | To draw together |
pole | The end of a magnet (either north or south) |
magnetic induction | To create magnetism in an object by the influence of a magnetic field |
magnetic field | The area under the influence of a magnetic force |
field lines | Lines drawn (N --> S) to show where the magnetic field is |
north-seeking pole | Also called the north pole, is the pole of a magnet that points north |
south-seeking pole | Also called the south pole, is the pole of a magnet that points south |
solenoid | A coil of wire |
electromagnet | A magnet created when electricity passes through a solenoid |
core | A magnetic substance in the centre of a solenoid |
