Term | Definition |
Cell | The basic unit of structure & function in living things |
Organelle | A tiny cell structure that carries out a specific function within the cell |
Cell Wall | A rigid layer of non living material the surrounds the cells of plants & some other organisms |
Cell Membrane | A cell structure that controls which substances can enter or leave the cell |
Nucleus | Directs all the cell's activities ("brain" of the cell) |
Mitochondria | Rod-shaped cell structures that produce most of the energy needed to carry out the cell's functions (Powerhouse) |
Ribosome | Where proteins are made (comes from the nucleus) |
Endoplasmic reticulum | A cell structure that forms a maze of passageways in which proteins &other materials are carried from one part of the cell to another |
Golgi body | A structure in a cell that receives proteins & other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic reticulum, packages them, & distributes them to other parts of the cell |
Vacuoles | The storage area of a cell (water, food, waste) |
Lysosome | A small round cell structure that contains chemicals that break down large food particles into smaller ones (cells clean-up crew) |
Chloroplasts | Capture energy from the sunlight & use it to produce food for a plant cell (traps sunlight) |
Nucleolus | Where ribosomes are made (inside of the nucleus) |
Cytoplasm | The area between the cell membrane & the nucleus. It contains a gel-like fluid in which many different organelles are found |
1. Cell wall 2. Chloroplast | Parts of a cell that a plant has, but an animal does not |
Cell part that an animal has, but a plant cell does NOT | Lysosome |
The vacuole of a plant is ___________ than that of an animal. | bigger |
Prokaryotic cell | Does NOT have a nucleus that contains genetic material. The genetic material looks like a tangled string, is found in the cytoplasm. Example: Bacteria |
Eukaryotic Cell | A cell that has a nucleus that contains genetic material. The cell has a nucleus enclosed with a nucleus membrane. Example: Plants & Animals |
Organization of many-called organism: | 1.Cell 2.Tissue 3.Organ 4.Organ System 5.Organism |
