| Question | Answer |
| Gauze | Bad as primary. Adheres, desiccates, releases bacteria |
| Impregnated gauze | Like gauze, but less adherent (better for preserving new granulation) |
| Transparent Films | Do not allow moisture/ bacteria into wound. Not good if exudate present. Facilitate moist environment, autolytic debridement. Use for minor burns and simple wounds. |
| Foams | Highly absorbent pads. Can use as secondary dressing with gel as primary |
| Hydrogels | Thin sheets or liquid gels. Used to increase moisture, dry wound, support autolytic debridement |
| Hydrocolloids | Most occlusive. Moisture retentive dressing. Absorbent material with film backing. Good for min-moderate exudate wounds. Can use over infected wounds for absorption. |
| Alginates (i.e. calcium alginate) | Absorb 20-30x their own weight. Gentle to remove. Maintain moist environment. Use if wound is infected, best is silver alginate for infected/ highly exudative |
