Term | Definition |
Metabolism | the sum of all life processes carried out by an organism |
Reproduction | process of making more of a species (not a metabolic process) |
Nutrition | process of obtaining food |
Digestion | process an organism uses to break down a large molecule into smaller molecules |
Excretion | process an organism uses to release wastes |
Transport | process of delivering materials to/from cells |
Homeostasis | process of keeping an internal balance (example...humans sweat to cool down their bodies) |
Growth | physical changes an organism goes through in its lifetime |
Evolve | gradual changes in a population's gene pool over time (not a metabolic process) |
Synthesis | process of putting small molecules together to form larger molecules |
Regulation | process of controlling life processes |
Locomotion | movement from place to place (NOT a characteristic of life) |
Nonliving | not endowed with life |
Organelles | tiny structures inside a cell that each perform a specific job for the cell |
Cell | the smallest structure found in all living things |
Tissue | group of similar cells that perform a particular function |
Organs | group of tissues that work together to perform closely related functions |
System | a group of organs working together |
Organism | an individual living thing |
Unicellular | one celled, simple, lack tissues, organs, systems |
Multicellular | many celled, complex, have tissues, organs, systems |
Genetic Code (DNA) | linear polymer found on the nucleus of a cell and associated with the transmission of genetic information |
Reproduction | the production of offspring |
Asexual reproduction | simple organisms, 1 parent, no gametes, identical offspring |
Sexual Reproduction | complex organisms, 2 parents, gametes, variation in offspring |
Stimulus | information or event that acts to arouse action |
Synthesis | process an organism uses to join small molecules together to make a larger molecule |
Circulation | movement of blood through the heart and blood vessels |
Absorption | The process of absorbing or assimilating substances into cells or across the tissues and organs through diffusion |
Photosynthesis | process plants use to make food |
Cellular respiration | process all living things use to make energy inside cells |
Differentiation (specialization) | process in which cells become specialized in structure and function |
Autotroph (producer) | organism that can capture energy to produce its own food |
Heterotroph (consumer) | organism that obtains energy from the food it consumnes |
Inorganic molecules | molecules without carbon |
HONC | the four elements found in all organisms |
Evolve | undergo development or evolution |
Scientific Method | organized set of steps used to solve a problem |
Variables | factors in an experiment that can change (time, location, etc...) |
Conclusion | statement that supports or refutes your hypothesis |
Independent variable | one factor that is purposely changed in an experiment |
Dependent variable | data you are measuring during an experiment |
Controlled variable | factors in an experiment that remain constant in each group |
Control group | group that is compared to the experimental group (no change is expected) |
Law | a proven theory...it cannot change. (law of gravity) |
Theory | a generally well accepted conclusion (theory of evolution) |
Controlled experiment | experiment in which all variables remain constant, except for one |
Experimental group | experimental group in which you purposely change one thing...group you are "testing" |
Hypothesis | an educated guess, "If...then" statement |
