Herbivore | an animal that eats only plants. Example: deer, cow, rabbit, worms |
Carnivore | an animal that eats other animals (meat) Example: wolf, lion, bird, spider |
Carolus Linneus | a man known as the father of classification |
Heterotroph | cannot produce their own food and must eat other organisms to live Ex: Fungi, humans |
Cladogram | a diagram showing how organisms are related based on shared derived characteristics |
Extinct | all members of a species disappear from earth |
Autotroph ("producer") | an organism that produces complex organic compounds (like fats), from simple substances present in its surroundings, using energy from light (photosynthesis) |
Autotroph example | algae, plants, bacteria |
Homologous structures | similar structures that related species have inherited from a common ancestor |
Taxonomy | the scientific study of how living things are classified |
Producer | an organism that can make its own food |
Omnivore | consumers that eat both plants and animals Example: Humans, bears, pigs |
