Statement | Awnser |
All living things inherit a set of characteristics or traits from | their parents. |
Members of any given species transfer | traits from one generation to the next. |
The passing of traits from one parent to offspring is called heredity and causes the offspring to | resemble the parent. |
Heredity applies to all organisms including | humans, animals, plants, insects and even bacteria. |
A trait is a | Characteristic the determines how an organism looks, acts or functions. |
Dogs will always have puppies, just as cats will always | have kittens and acorns will always grow into oak trees. |
Variations | are differences of an inherited trait among the members of a group. |
The difference in paw size, tail length or hair coloring | are examples of variations. |
However, for some organisms living in the wild, | color can make a big difference of survival. |
For example, a moth with brightly colored orange and yellow wings will not | survive very long if its environment is the dark bark of a pine tree. |
The brightly colored moth can easily be | be seen and eaten by birds. |
The environment, the surroundings | in which the organism lives is constantly changing. |
Sometimes the changes are | gradual, as in climate changes. |
Other changes may be sudden, such as | volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, landslides or violent storms. |
When an environment changes some organisiams | die, or move to a new environment. |
As a result the | population changes. |
Some behaviors, the way in which an organism responds or acts, | are inherited from the parent organism. |
If an adult dog barks at passing cars, | so might a puppy that grows observing the parent. |
Calves follow their mothers to the water toughs, | and soon learn to go there by themselves when they are thirsty. |
Instincts, behaviors that are inherited from the parent organism, explain... | shy salmon migrate upstream to spawn;a cat purrs, a duck swims, a spider spins a web and termites eat wood. |
Learned behaviors are those actions and behaviors that ate learned through | trial and error or brought about by the environment. |
Dogs learn different ways to let their owners know | when they want to go outside of go inside the house. |
A snowshoe rabbit with large feet to help them travel over snowy terrains/or a crane has long legs enabling it to walk and stand in muddy ponds/and a hawk which has a hooked beak for ripping and tearing prey those | are examples of specialized structures of body parts of different animals. |
