Term | Definition |
Heredity | The passing of genetic traits from parent to offspring |
Pollination | The transfer of pollen from the male reproductive structures to the female structures of seed plants. |
Self-pollinating plants | Has both male and female structures, pollen from one flower can fertilize the ovule of the same flower or the ovule of another flower on the same plants. *Produces offspring exactly like parent plant. |
Cross-pollination | Pollen from plant fertilizes the ovule of a flower on a different plant. Pollen can also be carried by the wind from one flower to another. |
True-breeding | All of its offspring will have the same trait as the parent. |
Characteristic | A feature that has different forms in population. Ex: Hair color, eye color. |
Traits | The different forms (specific) characteristics. Ex: Red hair, brown hair |
Dominant trait | The trait observed in the first generation when parents that have different traits are bred. *Express as a capital letter (B= brown eyes) *Trait that is observed in the first generation, at least one allele is inherited |
Recessive trait | A trait that reappears in the 2nd generation after disappearing in the first generation when parents with different traits are bred. *Expressed as a lower case letter. It is apparent when 2 recessive alleles are inherited. |
Ratio | A relationship between two different #'s that is often expressed as a fraction. (Can be expressed by :, a fraction, or using the word to.) |
Probability | The likelihood that a possible future event will occur in any given instance of the event. |
