Term | Definition |
Mitosis | cell division |
Chromosome | tightly coiled DNA (easy to move) |
Chromatin | loosely coiled DNA (easy to read) |
Chromatid | chromosomes after they split |
Centriole | DNA "fishing pole" (used to move DNA) |
Spindle Fiber | DNA "fishing line" (used to move DNA) |
Centromere | holds sister chromatids together |
Nucleus | contains DNA |
Sister Chromatids | identical pieces of chromosome |
Parent Cell | the original cell |
Daughter Cells | the "offspring" of a parent cell |
DNA | instructions for a cell's life |
Genes | pieces of DNA that code for traits |
Interphase | G1 S and G2 phases of the cell cycle |
Prophase | the beginning of mitosis; chromosomes, spindle fibers, and centrioles form; nucleus dissolves |
Metaphase | chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell; spindle fibers attach at centromeres |
Anaphase | spindle fibers shorten and chromosomes are pulled to each pole |
Telophase | centrioles and spindle fibers dissolve; a new nucleus forms |
Cytokinesis | cell splits into two fully independent cells |
