producer | an organism that is able to make its own food (such as a green plant) and is a food source for other organisms |
consumer | an organism or animal that eats other organisms or organic matter in a food chain |
decomposer | an organism (like bacteria, worms, and fungi) that feed and breakdown dead organisms and put nutrients back into the soil |
herbivore | an animal that eats plants (like rabbit, deer, or squirrels) |
carnivore | a meat eating animal also known as a predator |
omnivore | an organism (like a bear or human) that eats plants AND animals |
food chain | an arrangement of organisms in an ecological community showing the flow of energy according to the order of 'what eats what?' |
food web | interacting food chains in an ecological community; they show how more than one animal feeds upon a producer and how energy is passed through organisms |
predator | an animal that lives by capturing prey as a means of staying alive. It hunts for its food. |
prey | an animal taken by a predator as food |
survival | the process of staying alive; outliving others |
biome | regions of the world with similar climate, animals and plants; they can be terrestrial and aquatic |
photosynthesis | the chemical process by which plants make their own food. Plants use light to convert carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates. Oxygen is released during this process. |

population | all of the organisms that make up a specific group or occur in a specified habitat |

migration | the seasonal movement of a group of animals from one place to another, and in most cases, back again |
camouflage | coloration or patterns that help an animal to appear to blend in with its surroundings |
energy pyramid | a diagram that shows a food chain and where energy is used the least, next, and most; producers are always at the bottom |
symbiosis | the relationship between 2 different kinds of living things that live together and depend on each other |
mutualism | two different kinds of living things help each other out equally |
commensalism | a relationship in which one living thing benefits while the other living thing is neither helped nor harmed |
parasitism | an interaction between two living things in which one member of the relationship benefits while the other member is harmed |
