| Aggregates | inert, granular and inorganic materials that normally consist of stone or stone-like solids |
| Natural aggregates | is collected from the natural deposits without changing their nature during the process of production such as crushing and grinding |
| Three types of rock | igneous rock, sedimentary rock and metamorphic rock |
| Examples of igneous rock | Granite, Perlite, Basalt |
| Examples of sedimentary rock | Sandstone, Limestone |

| Manufactured (synthetic) aggregates | is synthetic materials as main product or by-product from industries. |
| Coarse aggregate | Aggregate particles that are retained on a 4.75mm sieve which has openings equal to 4.75mm between the sieve wires |
| Fine aggregate | Aggregate particles that pass a 4.75mm sieve and to be retained on 75µm sieve |
| Lightweight aggregate | The unit weight of light weight aggregate is less than 1100kg/m3 |
| Normal weight aggregate | The unit weight of normal weight aggregate is in 1520-1680 kg/m3 |
| Heavyweight aggregate | Heavyweight concrete contains aggregates that are natural or synthetic with typically density more than 2080kg/m3 |
| Examples of Lightweight aggregate | Expanded clay, Perlite |
| Examples of Normal weight aggregate | Granite, Limestone |
| Examples of Heavyweight aggregate | Magnesite limonite, a heavy iron ore |
