gravity | the attraction force between two objects |
law of universal gravitation | the scientific law that states that every object in the universe has gravity |
mass | the amount of matter in an object |
weight | the force of gravity on an object |
inertia | the tendency of an object to resist a change in motion |
Newton’s first law of motion | An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force |
astronomy | the study of the sun, moon, stars, and other objects in space |
axis | the imaginary line that passes through Earth’s center |
rotation | the spinning of Earth on its axis |
revolution | the movement of one object around the other |
orbit | the path of an object as it rotates around a another in space |
calendar | a system of organizing time the defines the beginning, length, and divisions of a year |
solstice | when the sun is farthest north or south of the equator |
equinox | when the noon sun is directly overhead at the equator |
phases | one of the different apparent shapes of the moon as seen from Earth |
gibbous | having the observable illuminated part greater than a semicircle and less than a circle. |
cresent | the curved sickle shape of the waxing or waning moon. |
new moon | The sunlight side faces away from Earth |
full moon | The entire sunlight side faces earth |
umbra | The very darkest spot of a moons shadow |
penumbra | The larger part of a moons shadow |
lunar eclipse | Occurs at a 1st or 3rd quater moon when Earth is directly between the moon and sun |
solar eclipse | When the moon passes directly between the earth and sun blocking sunlight from Earth. Occurs when new moon blocks view of sun |
tide | The rise and fall of ocean water that occurs every 12.5 hours |
neap tide | a tide with the least difference between two consecutive low and high tides |
spring tide | a tide with the greatest difference between two consecutive low and high tides |
telescope | a device used to build to observe distant objects by making them appear closer |
maria | dark, flat surfaces on the moon’s surface |
craters | large round pits |
meteoroids | chunks of rocks or dust from space |
Galileo Galilei | Italian scientist who saw the moon close up with the telescope |
waning | the phases of the moon that look like the moon is getting smaller |
waxing | the phases of the moon that look like the moon is getting bigger |
27.3 days | how long it takes for the moon to revolve around Earth |
29.5 days | the amount of days it takes from on new moon to the next |
total solar eclipse | when the moon blocks the total view of the sun from the earth |
partial solar eclipse | when part of the sun is visible from Earth |
eclipse | an object in space come between the sun and a third object casting a shadow on that object |
