stroke | blood clot or hemorrhage/bleeding in the brain |
stent | a wire mesh tube used to prop open an artery that has been widened by angioplasty |
septum | wall of muscle that separates the left and right sides of the heart |
valve | flap of tissue that helps keep blood flowing in one direction |
natural pacemaker | mass tissue in the right atrium that regulates the heartbeat |
artery | a blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart |
capillary | a microscopic thin-walled blood vessel |
aneurysm | a swollen, blood-filled weak spot in the wall of a blood vessel |
angioplasty | medical procedure in which a tiny balloon is used to widen/open partially clogged arteries |
vein | a blood vessel that carries blood back to the heart |
lymphatic system | carries lymph through a network of lymph capillaries and vessels, and drains it into large veins near the heart; help fight infections and disease |
lymph nodes | bean-shaped organs found throughout the body that filter out microorganisms and foreign materials taken up by lymphocytes |
lymphocyte | a type of white blood cell that fights infection |
hemoglobin | a part of a red blood cell that carries oxygen and carbon dioxide; made of an iron compound that gives blood its red color |
plasma | liquid part of blood, made mostly of water, in which oxygen, nutrients, and minerals are dissolved |
lymph | tissue fluid that has diffused into lymphatic capillaries |
pulmonary circulation | the flow of blood through the heart to the lungs and back to the heart |
systemic circulation | when oxygen-red blood moves to all the body organs and tissues except for the heart |
coronary circulation | the flow of blood to and from the tissues of the heart |
atriums/atria | upper heart chambers that collect blood (contract at the same time) |
platelets | irregularly shaped cell fragments that help clot blood |
ventricles | lower heart chambers that pump blood (contract at the same time) |
