Term | Definition |
stimulus | a change or signal in the environment that makes you react |
response | your body's reaction to a stimulus |
nerve impulse | the message a neuron carries |
neuron | nerve cell |
axon | the part of the neuron that carries the impulse away from the cell body |
nerve | a bundle of nerve fibers |
dendrite | picks up the nerve impulse and sends it to the cell body |
sensory neuron | a neuron that picks up a stimulus |
interneuron | a neuron that carries and impulse to another neuron |
motor neuron | a neuron that sends an impulse to a muscle or gland |
synapse | the place where a neuron transfers and impulse to ANOTHER neuron |
Central Nervous System | the brain and spinal cord |
Peripheral Nervous System | the nerves in your body are part of this |
Brain | the control center of your body |
Spinal Cord | a column of nerve tissue that links the brain to the peripheral nervous system |
Cerebrum | the part of your brain in charge of memory |
Cerebellum | the part of your brain in charge of balance |
Brain Stem (Medulla) | the part of your brain in charge of involuntary actions like breathing and heart beat |
Somatic Nervous System | controls voluntary actions |
Autonomic Nervous System | controls involuntary actions |
Reflex | an automatic response |
Concussion | a brain injury |
Pupil | the opening where light enters the eye |
Retina | lines the back of the eye |
Lens | focuses light in the eye |
Iris | the colored part of the eye |
Optic Nerve | allows the eye to send messages to the brain |
Hammer, Anvil, Stirrup | bones in the ear |
Taste Buds | sensory receptors on your tongue |
