| unicellular | an organism made of one cell (ex- bacteria) |
| multicellular | an organism composed of more than one cell |
| cell | the basic unit (of structure and function) in living things |
| organelle | a tiny cell structure or part that carries out a specific job in the cell |
| cell wall | a strong or rigid layer that surrounds the cells of plants; provides shape, support, and strength |
| cell membrane | a cell part that controls which substances can enter or leave the cell |
| lysosome | this is found only in animal cells; contains chemicals to help break down food and old cell parts |
| nucleus | directs and controls all cell activity |
| cytoplasm | gel-like fluid made mostly of water that holds other organelles and helps chemical reactions take place |
| nucleolus | where ribosomes are made |
| ribosome | where proteins are made |
| endoplasmic reticulum (E.R.) | passageways that carry or transport protein and other materials from one part of the cell to another |
| golgi bodies | receive proteins and other materials and packages them, and distributes them to other parts of the cell |
| mitochondria | an organelle that uses food molecules and changes it into energy for the cell to use |
| chloroplasts | found only in plant cells that captures energy from the sun to be used in photosynthesis |
| vacuole | stores food, water, and wastes in a cell; it is larger in plant cells |
| 3 parts of the cell theory | all living things are made of cells, cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things, all cells are made from other cells |
