carnivore | a meat-eating animal |
decomposer | an organism that breaks down the substance of dead organisms (ex: mushrooms and bacteria) |
Dependent | relying on something or someone for support (ex: fish depend on water) |
food chain | the process of being passed along from a plant to a plant-eating animal to a meat-eating animal. (ex: clover>rabbit>coyote) |
food web | a group of food chains that are linked together |
herbivore | a plant eating animal |
life span | the length of time from beginning of development (birth) to death of the plant of animal. |
omnivore | an animal that eats both plants and other animals |
predator | an animal that hunts and eats other animals |
prey | an animal that is hunted or eaten by other animals (mice are the prey of cats) |
producer | a living thing that makes food (plants) |
scavenger | an animal or insect that feeds on the remains of dead animals (ex. vultures, ants, crickets, snails, isopods.) |
consumer | any organism that can not produce its own food, such as animals, including humans. |
