Question | Answer |
Mixtures | Two or more substances that have been combined. |
Heterogeneous | Hetero = Greek meaning different. You can see different things in a heterogeneous mixture. |
Homogeneous | Homo = Greek means same or like. Substances are so well mixed that they look the same. |
Suspension | A mixture where larger particles are mixed into smaller particles. The larger particles suspend throughout mixture. |
Solution | One substance that is dissolved into another substance. |
Solute | Something being dissolved |
Solvent | Something doing the dissolving. |
Universal Solvent | Many other substances on earth are able to dissolved in it because of its chemical properties. |
Nonpolar molecule | Won't dissolve in water. |
Soapy solutions | Ends love both oil and water. |
Alloys | Metals that have been dissolved into other metals to form a metal solution |
Colloid | Particles are larger than the particles in a solution but smaller than the particles in a suspension.(ie: Pudding or aerosol or foam.) |
Gel | Colloid made of solid particles mixed in a liquid. |
Aerosol | Liquid mixed in a gas. |
Foam | Made by mixing a gas in a liquid |
Emulsion | Droplets of liquids mixed with another liquid form this - emulsion (mayonnaise = egg yolk and oil) |
Concentrate | Large amount of solute in the solvent |
Saturated solution | Solution that has reached the point where no more solute can dissolved in the solvent. |
Supersaturated solution | Dissolves more than a saturated solution - but it's very unstable (Soda) |
Evaporation | When a liquid turns into a gas. |
Filtration | Used to allow a liquid to seep through a substance that traps larger particles, letting only the pure liquid through. |
Sifting | Method used to separate large or important parts of a mixture. |
Magnetism | Used to separate mixtures that have highly magnetic metals in them. |
Chromatography | Method of separating mixtures as they move across a certain material that attracts the components differently. Chromatography = Greek meaning color writing. |
