Question | Answer |
What is a cell? | The smallest, most basic unit of life. |
What things are made out of cells? | ALL living things including plants, animals, bacteria, fungi, and many diverse single-celled organisms. |
What is the job of the cell membrane? | To determine what things will enter and leave the cell. |
What is the job of the cell wall? | To provide support and protection to a PLANT cell. |
What is the job of the nucleus? | To direct all of the cells activities. |
What is in the nucleus? | DNA (genetic information) which includes the instructions for all of the organisms traits as well as the directions for all of the activities necessary for life. |
What is the job of the mitochondria? | To release energy from stored food through the process of RESPIRATION. |
What is the job of the vacuoles? | To store water, nutrients, and waste. Sort of like your locker where you store things that you are going to need or get rid of. |
What is the job of the chloroplast? | To convert light from the SUN into chemical energy (food) in PLANTS. This process is called photosynthesis. |
What is photosynthesis? | The process of converting light from the sun into chemical energy (food). PLANT CELLS only. |
What is respiration? | The process whereby the mitochondria combines the chemical energy in glucose (Sugar) with oxygen to release stored energy for the cells activities. |
What organelles are in plant cells but not in animal cells? | cell wall and chloroplast |
Do all cells look the same? | NO - they look differently depending on the job that they perform for the organism. Brain cells look very different from skin cells. Bacteria look different from plant cells. |
