Term | Definition |
Renal System | Maintain fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance. |
Filtration | Major function of nephron that filters water soluble substances of the blood. |
Reabsorption | Major function of nephron that reabsorbs filtered nutrients, water, and electrolytes. |
Secretion | Major function of nephron that secretes waste products |
Glomerulus | Site of fluid filtration from blood to the nephron. More permeable than other capillaries in the body. Prevents passage of blood and proteins. |
125 ML/ Min | Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) |
Blood volume | One of the most important factors of GFR |
Proximal convoluted tubule | Reabsorbs about 2/3 of the filtered water and electrolytes. Reabsorbs all of the glucose, amino acids, and vitamins |
Loop of Henle | Descending loop= Transports water.Delivers concentrated filtrate to ascending loop |
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) | Normal value 10-20 mg. Indirect measure of overall hydration. |
Creatinine | Normal value 0.7-1.5 mg. Reflects GFR. Most commonly used "quick" method to estimate renal function in actual patients. |
