Law Enforcement's responsibilities | receiving/documenting reports, investigating crimes, gathering/holding evidence, making arrests |
judiciary's responsibilities | overseeing court proceedings, making sure laws are followed, making final decisions, deciding release status of offender, deciding on plea bargains, determining final sentence |
offender's rights | legal representation, fair & speedy trial, remain silent |
victim's rights | kept apprised of status of case, any threats will lead to prosecution |
Court System | rights of the offender and the victim are brought to play |
Corrections and Sentencing | punishment for crimes |
probation | PUNISHMENT (after convicted) |
parole | REWARD (after released w/ time remaining on sentence) |
incarceration | deemed not able to follow society's rules |
Correction's responsibilities | maintaining security, providing medical care, providing counseling, processing inmates for release back into society |
felony | any crime that is punishable by more than 2.5 years in a state prison |
misdemeanor | any crime that is punishable by 2.5 years or less in a county jail |
