Term | Definition |
Behavioral Adaptation | An inherited behavior that helps an organism survive. |
Structural Adaptation | An adaptation of an organism's body parts or coloring. |
Hibernation | A period of inactivity that some animals experience in winter that allows them to survive on stored body fat. |
Estivation | An inactive state resembling deep sleep, in which some animals living hot climates pass the summer. It protects them against heat and dryness. |
Imprinting | The development, through exceptionally fast learning, in young animals of attraction to members of their own species. |
Tropism | The turning of a living organism toward or away from an external stimulus, such as light, heat, or gravity. |
Mimicry | The similarity of one species to another or the ability to blend in to ones' surroundings. |
Adaptations | Inherited traits that help individual organisms meet their needs and survive in the environment. |
Innate Behavior | Existing in a person or animal from birth; instinctive, not learned. |
Learned Behavior | Actions and behavior that is taught. Some are taught by parents or siblings but environment also contributes. |
Migration | Periodic movement and return of animals from one place to another. |
Coloration | The color of an organism that helps it survive. |
Natural Selection | Survival of the fittest. |
Instinct | An inherited tendency of an organism to behave in a certain way, usually in reaction to its environment. |
