Scientific Method | Process used to gather information about the world around us |
Hypothesis | Educated guess about the solution to the problem. Must be an "If...then..." statement |
Data | Information gathered during the experiment |
Steps of the Scientific Method | 1. Identify the problem or question 2. Conduct research on the topic 3. Form a hypothesis 4. Perform the experiment 5. Analyze the data 6. Form a conclusion from the data gathered 7. Publish the results |
Experiment | The process used to test the hypothesis |
Control | Must not change so the experiment is fair. Used for comparisons |
Observations | Information gathered using the five senses |
Independent Variable | What the scientist changes in the experiment |
Dependent Variable | Can be measured. Is a result of the experiment. |
Problem | A question that may be answered using the scientific method. Must be observable, measurable, and repeatable |
Constants | The things in the experiment that don't change. Ex: size of a container, amount of liquid, etc. |
