Biology | The scientific study of life. |
Biosphere | All of the environments on Earth that support life. |
Ecosystem | Consists of all the organisms living in a particular area. |
Community | An assemblage of all the organisms living together and potentially interacting in a particular area. |
Population | A group of individuals belonging to one species and living in the same geographic area. |
Organism | An individual living thing. |
Organ system | A group of organs that work together in performing vital body functions. |
Organ | Is made up of several different tissues, each made up of a group of similar cells that perform a specific function. |
Tissues | An integrated group of cells with a common function, structure, or both. |
Cell | Basic unit of life. |
Organelle | A membrane enclosed structure that performs a specific function in a cell. |
Molecule | A cluster of small chemical units called atoms held together by chemical bonds. |
Emergent Properties | New properties that arise with each step upward i the hierarchy of life, owing to the arrangement and interactions of parts as complexity increases. |
Prokaryotic cells | A type of cell lacking a membrane enclosed nucleus and other membrane enclosed organelles; found in the domains of Bacteria and Archaea. |
Eukaryotic cell | A type of cell that has a membrane enclosed nucleus and other membrane enclosed organelles. |
Systems Biology | The study of interactions among the parts. |
Consumers | Are things that eat plants and other animals. |
Producers | Plants that provide food for a typical ecosystem. |
Genes | The units of inheritance that transmit information form parents to offspring. |
Domains | Above the kingdom level; consists of Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya. |
Bacteria | One of two prokaryotic domains of life. |
Archaea | One of two prokaryotic domains of life. |
Eukarya | A domain that consists of four kingdoms; Protists, Plantae, Fungi, and Animalia. |
Evolution | Species living today are descendants of ancestral species. |
Natural Selection | Population with varied inherited traits; elimination of individuals with certain traits reproduction of survivors. |
Inductive Reasoning | This kind of reasoning derives generalizations from a large number of specific observations. |
Hypothesis | A proposed explanation for a set of observations. |
Deductive Reasoning | Logic flows from general premises tot he specific results we should expect if the premises are true. |
Theory | Is broader in scope. |
Controlled Experiment | Designed to compare an experimental group with a controlled group. |
Technology | The application of scientific knowledge for a specific purpose. |
