Question | Answer |
Nucleus | the central core of an atom containing protons and usually electrons. |
Proton | A small positively charged particle in the nucleus of the atom. |
Neutron | A small particle in the nucleus of the atom, with no electric charge. |
Electron | A tiny, negatively charged particle that moves around the nucleus. |
Atomic Number | The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. |
Isotope | An atom with the same number of protons and a different number of neutrons from other atoms of the same element. |
Mass Number | The Sum of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. |
Model | In science, a diagram, a mental picture, a mathmatical statement, or an object that helps explain ideas about the natural world. |
Period | a horizontal row of elements in the periodic table. |
Group | Elements in the same vertical column of the periodic table; also called families. |
Chemical symbol | A one or two letter representation of an element. |
Atomic Mass | The average mass of all of the isotopes of an element. |
What are the three particles found in an atom? | Protons, Neutrons and electrons. |
What are the two particles found in the nucleus? | Protons and Neutrons |
What two particles have the same number in an atom? | Protons and electrons. |
How many protons are in a Carbon atom? | 6 |
Explain how elements are identified in terms of their atoms. | Elements are often identified by the number of protons ( which is the same as the number of electrons) this is called the atomic number. Or thy identify them by atomic mass which is a total of the protons and neutrons in the nucleus. |
Why do scientists use models to study atoms? | Atoms are so small that use models to describe them. |
How did Mendeleex arrange the first periodic table? | In increasing atomic mass. |
What do elements in the same column have in common? | They have similar characteristics. |
What can you predict about an element based on it's position in the table. | Elements to the left are highly reactive elements. Elements in the middle are relatively unreactive. They elements on the very right of the able are nonreactive gases. |
