Term | Definition |
Troposphere | First 0-11 miles. 80% Earth's air, most air pollution |
Stratosphere | 11-31 miles. Lower portion is the ozone |
Good Ozone | Filters 95% of UV rays Occurs in lower portion of stratosphere |
Bad Ozone | Very reactive- produces photochemical ozone Occurs in lower portion of stratosphere |
Air Pollution | Chemicals in the atmosphere in a high enough concentration to produce harm: 1. Living Organisms 2. Damaged Ecosystems 3. Climate effect 4. Damage to physical structures |
Primary Pollutants | Discharged directly into the air from human activities |
Secondary Pollutants | Chemicals that react with primary pollutants and other air components. |
Major Air Pollutants | 1. Carbon Monoxide (CO) 2. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) |
Carbon Monoxide (CO) | Colorless, odorless, tasteless, deadly gas. Comes from incomplete combustion of fossil fuels that contain carbon. |
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) | Colorless, odorless, greenhouse gas related to atmospheric warming. Greater than 90% comes from natural sources (volcanos) Man sources about 7% |
