| Term | Definition |
| Photosynthesis | process plants use to make food (converting radiant energy from the sun to chemical energy) |
| Radiant Energy | light energy from the sun |
| Chloroplast | plant cell organelle where photosynthesis occurs |
| Chlorophyll | green pigment in chloroplasts that helps photosynthesis occur |
| Tropism | movements caused by a change in a plant's growth pattern - it's response to external stimuli |
| Geotropism/Gravitropism | a plant's response to gravity - it's stem grows upward and roots grow downward. |
| Phototropism | the way a plant grows or bends in response to light |
| Thigmotropism | a plant's response to touch; ex: a vine wrapping around a fence post |
| Hydrotropism | the way a plant grows or bends in response to water |
| Turgor Pressure | pressure in a plant cell caused by the water in its vacuole; if this is too low, the plant wilts |
| Xylem | internal structure of a plant that delivers water and nutrients to the leaves and flowers. |
| Biotic | living things |
| Abiotic | non-living things |
| Producer/Autotroph | organisms that make their own food |
| Consumer/Heterotroph | organisms that rely on eating other organisms for energy |
| Biomass | material from living or recently living organisms |
| Decomposition | process by which large organic materials and molecules are broken down into smaller ones. |
| Biodiversity | the number and variety of organisms in an area. |
| Sustainability | the ability of an ecosystem to keep/maintain its organisms |
| Tundra | The "frozen desert" - very cold and dry; no trees bc ground is frozen most of the time; animald have thick layer of fat & white fur |
| Taiga | very cold in winter, warmer in summer; a lot of coniferous trees; plants - evergreens w/ waxy needle like leaves; animals hibernate in winter |
| Deciduous Forest | 4 seasons; animals rely on camouflage; plants use phototropism |
| Tropical Rainforest | near the equator; very warm and TONS of rain; plants have drip tips and many vines rely on thigmotropism to get light; many animals live in trees and eat fruit |
| Desert | very dry and warm/hot; many animals are nocturnal; plants have the ability to store water |
| Grasslands | large, rolling terrains with few trees and lots of grasses; also known as savannahs, prairies, and pastures; many animals live underground since there aren't many trees |
