Term | Definition |
autonomic nervous system (ANS) | governs involuntary functions of cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and glands |
blood-brain barrier | physiologic barrier between blood capillaries and brain tissue |
central nervous system (CNS) | c/o brain, spinal cord, and cranial nerves I and II |
cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) | fluid circulating within the subarachnoid space that surrounds brain, brainstem, spinal cord; provides cushioning for brain, spinal cord & allows fluid shifts from cranial cavity to spinal cav; carries nutrients |
cranial nerves CNs | 12 paired nerves c/o cell bodies w/ fibers that exit from cranial cavity; some have only afferent, others efferent & some both |
dermatome | area of skininnervated by sensor fibers of a single dorsal root of a spinal nerve |
glial cells | (glia or neuroglia) provide support, nourishment, & protection to neurons div into microglia and macroglia (astrocytes and oligodendrocytes) |
lower motor neurons (LMN) | final common pathway in which descending motor tracts influence skeletal muscle |
meninges | 3 layers of protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord |
neurons | primary functional unit of the nervous system characterized by: 1)excitability 2)conductivity, & 3)influence |
neurotransmitters | chemicals affecting the transmission of impulses across the synaptic cleft |
peripheral nervous system (PNS) | c/o cranial nerves III to XII, spinal nerves, peripheral components of ANS |
reflex | involuntary response to stimulus |
synapse | structural and functional junction between 2 neurons |
upper motor neurons (UMN) | originate in cerebral cortex and project downward; corticobulbar tract ends in brainstem & corticospinal tract descents into spinal cord |
