multicellular | organisms composed of many cells |
metabolism | the combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials |
stimulus | any change or signal from the environment that can make an organism react in some way |
response | an action or change in behavior that occurs as a result of a stimulus |
development | the process of change that occurs during an organism's life to produce a more complex organism (ie baby to adult) |
asexual reproduction | reproductive process involving only one parent; offspring are identical to the parent. |
sexual reproduction | a reproductive process that involves two parents; combines genetic material to produce a new organism that is different from either parent |
spontaneous generation | the mistaken idea that living things come from nonliving sources |
autotroph | an organisms that is able to produce it's own food |
heterotroph | an organism that cannot make its own food |
homeostasis | the condition in which an organism's internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes in its surroundings |
classification | grouping together similar organisms |
taxonomy | the scientific study of how living things are classified and named |
binomial nomenclature | two-part scientific naming system (classification) |
genus | a classification grouping that consists of closely related organisms; part 1 of binomial nomenclature |
species | a group of similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce offspring that can also mate and reproduce |
prokaryote | unicellular organism that lacks a nucleus |
nucleus | the part of a cell that contains DNA; the brain of the cell |
eukaryote | an organism whose cell contains a nucleus |
evolution | change over time; the process of a species passing down helpful adaptations |
branching tree diagram | a diagram that shows probable evolutionary relationships among organisms and the order in which specific characteristics my have evolved |
shared derived characteristic | a characteristic or trait that the common ancestor of a group had and passed on to its descendants |
convergent evolution | the process by which unrelated organisms evolve (develop over time) similar characteristics |
