Term | Definition |
Access Copyright | Ensures that creators are paid when their intellectual material is copied |
Copyright | Allows an author to protect his/her published works for up to 70 years after their death. Gives them license to copy, distribute, and sell their content. Does not include ideas. |
Intellectual Property | Anything that is created by the mind, from inventions to art to literary works |
Royalty | The amount of money paid to an author for the use of their copyrighted work |
Trade-Marks | Identifies the products of one source from similar products of another source |
Public Domain | Applies to works with ineligible or expired copyrights; available to any person for any purpose; no one has ownership |
Moral Rights | The rights of creators as per the copyright laws of Canada |
Performing Rights | The right to perform music in public |
Plagiarism | The intentional or accidental practice of taking someone else's work/ideas and passing them off as one's own |
Fair Dealing | Exceptions to copyright laws |
Patent | A government granted license given to an inventor giving exclusive rights to produce and sell a product for a limited time |
Blanket License | Authorizes a collection of songs to be played as often and as many times as wanted (e.g., the radio) |
