Term | Definition |
Classification | The division of organisms into groups, or classes, based on specific characteristics |
Taxonomy | the science of describing, naming, and classifying organisms |
Genus | The first part of the scientific name, begins with a capital letter |
Binomial nomenclature | Two part name, genus and species |
Taxonomic/Dichotomous Key | Give two pairs of statements to identify an organism |
Species | The second part of the scientific name, begins with a lower case letter- any organism that can mate and produce fertile offspring |
Archaea Domain | prokaryotes (most of which are known to live in extreme environments) that are distinguished from other prokaryotes by differences in their genetics and in the makeup of their cell wall; |
Bacteria Domain | extremely small, single-celled organisms that usually have a cell wall and that usually reproduce by cell division (singular, bacterium) |
Eukarya Domain | in a modern taxonomic system, a domain made up of all eukaryotes; this domain aligns with the traditional kingdoms Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia |
