host | is a living thing that provides a source of energy for a virus or an organism |
parasite | organisms that lives on or in a host and causes it harm |
bacteriophage | viruses that infects bacteria |
vaccine | a substance introduced into the body to simulate the production of chemicals that destroys specific diasese causing viruses and orgamisms |
bacteria | are prokaryotes. The material in their cells is not contained in a nucleus. single celled |
flagellum | a long whiplike structure that helps a cell to move |
binary fission | in which one cell divides to form two identical cells |
asexual reproduction | 2 parents combine their material to produce a new organism |
conjugation | one bacterium transfers some genetic material to another bacterium through a threadlike bridge |
endspore | a small rounded thick-walled resting cells that form inside a bacterial cell |
pasteurization | food is heated to a temp that is high enough to kill most harmful bacteria without changing the taste |
decomposer | organisms that break down into large chemicals in dead organisms into small chemicals |
protist | eukaryotes. that cannot be classified as animals, plants, or fungi |
protozoan | unicellular can be classified into 4 different groups based on the wat they move |
pesudopod | false foot. form when cytoplasm flows toward 1 location and the rest of the organisms follows |
contractile valcuole | a structure that collects the extra water and then expels it from the cell |
cilia | hairlike projections from cells that move with a wavelike motion |
symbiosis | a close relationship in which at least 1 of the species benefit |
mutualism | close relationship between organisms of 2 species in which both organisms benefit |
algae | extremly diverse and are autotrophs |
spore | a tiny cell that is able to grow into new oganisms |
fungi | eukaryotoes that have cell walls are hetotrophs that feed by absorbing food and use spores to reproduce |
