ecosystem | all the living organisms that live in an area and the nonliving features of their environment |
ecology | the study of the interactions that take place among organisms and their environment. |
population | all the organisms that belong to the same species living in a community |
community | all the populations of different species that live in an ecosystem |
habitat | the place where an organism lives that provides the types of food, shelter, moisture, and temperature needed for survival |
limiting factor | anything that can restrict the size of a population including living and nonliving features of an ecosysten such as predators and drought |
carrying capacity | the largest number of individuals of a particular species that an ecosystem can support over time |
biotic potential | the highest rate of reproduction under ideal conditions (how many offspring would be produced if conditions were perfect) |
producer | an organism such as a green plant or algae, that uses an outside source of energy like the sun to create energy-rich food, beginning of a food chain |
consumer | an organism that cannot create energy-rich molecules but obtains its food by eating other organisms. |
symbiosis | any close relationship between species, including mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism |
mutualism | a type of symbiotic relationship in whitch both organisms benefit |
commennsalism | a type of symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other organism is not affected |
parasitism | a type of symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other organism is harmed |
niche | the unique ways an organism survives, obtains food and shelter, and avoids danger. the role and organism plays in its habatat |
food chain | a model of the feeding relationships among organisms in an ecosystem. It shows the transfer of energy from one organism to the next. Food webs are made up of all the food chains in an ecosystem. |
