Inhaled Short-Acting Beta2 Agonists (SABA) | -Rescue/preventative relaxes the smooth muscle of the bronchioles, prevent or relieves bronchospasm; also used as a decongestant |
Anticholinergics | Prevents bronchconstriction, causing the airways to dilate |
Corticosteroids / Oral Steroids | Used to decrease inflammation in the lungs Oral-COPD long term use |
Inhaled corticosteroids | - Long term use Acts locally on bronchial tissue to prevent inflammation; inhibits cytokine production. |
Long Acting Beta2 Agonists | - Long term prevention of symptoms, prevention of exercise induced asthma, by causing bronchodilation |
Xanthines | Older, not much now unless nothing else works - potent bronchodilation |
Mast Cell Stabelizers | Anti-inflammatory; blocks early and late reaction to allergen (histamine release), thus preventing attacks |
Leukotriene Modifiers (antagonists) | Leukotriene receptor antagonists, thus blocking the leukotrienes from causing inflammation and edema |
Lipoxygenase Inhibitor | Inhibits production of leukotrienes |
Immunomodulators | -Moderate to severe asthma unresponsive to other medications. Monoclonal antibody (anti-IgE) that binds to circulating IgE, prevent it from binding to receptors on mast cells and basophils |
