What is a rock? | A mixture of minerals, rocks fragments, volcanic glass, organic matter, or other natural materials |
What are the four most common rock forming minerals? | Quartz, Mica, Feldspar, Hornblende |
What is the characteristic of Quartz? | Usually white to clear |
What is the characteristic of Mica? | Muscovite, light and biotite, dark |
What is the characteristic of Feldspar | Pink in color |
What is the characteristic of Hornblende | usually dark colored |
What is the rock cycle | A diagram/model that shows how rocks slowly change through time |
What are the 3 types of rocks | Igneous, Metamorphic, Sedimentary |
Rocks are classified based on how they what? | Form |
What are the processes by which rocks change? | Weathering, melting, erosion, heating, cooling, compaction, cementation, deposition, pressure |
True or False The changes that take place in the rock cycle never destroy or create matter | True |
How is igneous rocks formed? | Magma/lava cools and hardens |
What are they types of igneous rocks | Intrusive, extrusive, volcanic glass |
What are the characteristics of Intrusive Rocks? | Rocks that form from magma below the earth's surface |
What are the characteristics of Extrusive Rocks? | Rocks that form from lava on the earth's surface |
What are the characteristics of Volcanic Glass? | Pumice, obsidian, and scoria are examples of volcanic glass |
What are the classifications of Igneous Rocks? | By the type of magma/lava that they form |
What are basaltic Rocks? | Igneous rocks, dense, dark colored rocks. Made mostly of iron and magnesium |
What are Granitic Rocks? | Igneous rocks , light - colored rocks of lower density that basaltic rocks. made mostly of silicon and oxygen |
What are Andesitic Rocks? | Igneous rocks, have mineral compositions between those of basaltic and granitic rocks Usually red to pink in color, but not always |
What are the formations of Metamorphic Rocks? | changes in temperature and pressure or the presence of hot watery fluids |
What can metamorphic rocks form from | Igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic rocks |
What are the classifications of metamorphic rocks? | by its composition and texture |
What are foliated rocks? | when mineral grains line up in parallel layers or bands |
What are nonfoliated rocks? | mineral grains that grow and rearrange, but they don't form layers and layering does not occur |
What are the formations of sedimentary rocks? | Sediments are loose materials such as rock fragments, mineral grains, and bits of shell that have been moved by wind, water, ice, or gravit |
How are they formed? | when sediments become pressed or cemented together, or when minerals form from solutions and often form in layers |
What are sedimentary rocks classified by? | detrital, chemical, or organic |
What are the Sizes of Sediments? | Clay - Shale, Silt - Siltstone, Sand - Sandstone, Gravel - Conglomerate & Breccia |
What are the 3 processes of forming sedimentary rocks? | Cementation, compaction, evaporation |
What is cementation? | Occurs when larger pieces of sediments are naturally cemented together to form sedimentary rock |
What is compaction? | occurs when small pieces of sediment are pressed together by the layers above them to form sedimentary rock |
What is evaporation? | occurs when solutions evaporate and form rocks |
