El Nino | a periodic change in the location of warm and cool surface waters in the Pacific Ocean. |

trough | the lowest point of a wave. |
wave length | the distance between two corresponding points that are adjacent on a wave. |
wave height | the vertical distance between the creat and trough of a wave. |
wave period | the time between the passage of two waves crests/ troughs at a fixed point. |
breakers | ocean waves whose crest fall because of gravity as they approach the shore. |
whitecaps | white foaming waves with very steep crests that break in the open ocean before the waves get close to the shore. |
swellls | rolling waves that move steadily across the ocean. |
tsunami | a wave that forms when a large volume of ocean water is suddenly moved up or down. |
storm surge | a local rise in sea level near the shore that is caused mainly by strong winds in a storm. |
tides | daily changes in the levels of ocean water. |
lunar phases | the different appearences of the moon throughout the month. |
lunar cycle | the orbit of the moon around the earth, during which all of the lunar phases occur. |
tidal range | the difference between levels of ocean water at high tide and low tide. |
spring tide | tides that have the largest daily tidal range and occur during the new and full moons. |
neap tides | tides with the smallest daily tidal range that occur during the first and third quarters of the moon. |
